Henry Jebe's fascination with Lawrence was triggered by an article on the KAP pioneer in the fall 1994 issue of KiteLines. A few years ago he decided to honor Lawrence by recreating a replica of his camera and recapturing Lawrence's April 18th, 1906 photo "San Francisco in Ruins."

As Jebe explained to DF staff member Renea Nielsen, he had intended to raise his camera with kites, as Lawrence had done, but he ran out of time to construct them. Henry took his photograph on April 18th 2006 with the aid of a helicopter, not a kite system. He still has plans to build the same kites as Lawrence, and take the photograph exactly as Lawrence did, but this goal might be hampered by current FAA height regulations, which did not apply to Lawrence.

In our photograph, Henry and DF Executive Director Ali Fujino discuss his photograph of San Francisco.
